41,001 fans were treated to a fine game at SAFECO Field as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Alaska Hot Stoves won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Finally, Alaska
prevailed in the 10th inning. After two outs Jamey Carroll drew a walk.
Gentry got a great jump and stole second easily. Alaska continued their
aggressive style with another stolen base. Prince Fielder followed next and
he drew a walk. Lucas Duda followed, but he was set down on strikes. Alaska
finished with just 6 hits in the victory.
The victory went to Rafael Betancourt(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Henry Rodriguez(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.
He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 1
inning of work.

Clayton Kershaw shut down the South Range batters on just 1 hit and second
baseman Rickie Weeks connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at SAFECO Field
as the New York Metz embarrassed the South Range Mariners by the lopsided

Kershaw(1-0) dominated South Range hitters. He surrendered only 1 hit and 6
walks in 9 innings. Kershaw mowed down 14 South Range batters. New York
totaled 12 hits on the night.
Jason Vargas(0-2) took the loss. His ERA increased from 4.30 to 7.32 as he
allowed 9 runs in 5 innings. Kershaw, when asked about his 14 strikeout
performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we
